Chemscape's CHAMP software offers structured chemical risk assessments based on use to help you manage the lifecycle of chemicals. It offers a defensible position by identifying hazards, calculates the risk based how the product is used, and offers a plan for controls.
“Ballard is now proactive in planning our chemical use, purchasing and risk management. We improved our auditing on chemical use with reports. We have optimized allocation of resources based on risk and compatibilities.”
Industrial Hygienist, Ballard, a global leader in clean fuel cell technology
Proven Carcinogen, Proven Respiratory Sensitizers
Probable, Possible Carcinogen, Reproductive Hazard, Repeated Exposure
Systemic toxins and corrosive agents
Causes harm with single exposure
Reversible irritants
Chemical risk assessments are the core of every occupational health and safety program. The risk assessment should consider the chemical hazards and the potential for exposure, including the amount of product used, the controls in place, and how often it is used. Chemscape’s Chemical Hazard Assessment and Management Program (CHAMP) provides comprehensive chemical risk assessments as part of the chemical approval process. Managing risk is critical before a chemical exposure or incident occurs.
When a user requests a product, CHAMP assigns a hazard band code according to its ingredients. This code indicates the overall health hazard to workers. The program also identifies regulatory or health lists to which the product may be associated with.
CHAMP calculates the risk of exposure by asking the user questions an Industrial Hygienist would ask: chemical quantity, task frequency, control measures in use. Risk assessments are based on the chemical hazards and controls available, not absence of past incidents. Once saved, every risk assessment is logged and accessible with the SDS to any user.
Using control banding principles and key health and safety resources, CHAMP recommends controls based on the NIOSH hierarchy of controls: engineering controls, administrative controls and PPE. CHAMP can readily offer less hazardous substitutes from a huge inventory of products.
Worksite safety increases when workers have a clear understanding of the hazards and controls necessary to do their job safely. Reducing the number of incidents not only minimizes Workers’ Insurance Claims, but also enhances overall productivity.
